Electric vehicles in Maldives are getting a new look. The Transport Ministry has introduced green license plates, and EV owners now have 60 days to switch.

The update comes under the seventh amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations, which came into effect recently. From now on, personal electric vehicles must use license plates with white lettering on a green background. This makes them easier to identify on the road.

Different types of vehicles will also have different colour codes. Commercial electric vehicles will use green plates with yellow lettering. Consular vehicles will have white lettering on blue plates, while commercial vehicles will continue using black lettering on yellow plates.

Anyone who already owns an electric vehicle must change to the new green plates within 60 days from when the rule started. Plates that do not match the new standards are not allowed.

The change is part of a bigger plan to support environmentally friendly transport. It also helps authorities quickly identify electric vehicles and manage road systems better.
