President Mohamed Muizzu has carried out a major cabinet reshuffle, with ten ministers stepping down and being reappointed under revised portfolios.
Mass resignations
Earlier today, ten cabinet ministers submitted their resignations, including those handling defence, foreign affairs, health, tourism, and education. The President’s Office said the resignations were made to allow for restructuring and reforms. The President also thanked the outgoing ministers for their service.
Ministers reappointed with new roles
Later today, the cabinet was reappointed at a ceremony held at the President’s Office.
Most ministers were reassigned rather than replaced, with several portfolios reorganised.
Among the changes:
- Moosa Zameer was appointed Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises
- Ali Ihusan took on Homeland Security, Labour and Technology
- Iruthisham Adam was appointed Foreign Minister
- Geela Ali was assigned Health, Family and Welfare
- Mohamed Saeed was given Economic, Transport and Trade
Other ministers were also reassigned across areas such as infrastructure, environment, education, tourism, and youth.
Changes to portfolios
The reshuffle mainly involved merging and renaming ministries. Some sectors were grouped together under broader portfolios, reflecting a reorganisation rather than a full change in leadership. The changes suggest a shift in how responsibilities are structured within the government, while largely retaining the same cabinet members.
