The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced plans to build new, modern mosques at the locations of Bandaara Mosque and Zikra Mosque in Malé.
Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said the projects will be supported by private donors. Construction of the new mosque at the Bandaara Mosque site is expected to begin after Ramadan.
What is planned?
The government says the new mosques will be larger and more modern.
Another mosque is also planned at the site of Zikra Mosque on Majeedhee Magu. The minister hopes to place the foundation stone for the new mosque on the 27th night of Ramadan.
Why are people talking about it?
Many people have shared concerns online about the plans for Bandaara Mosque.
The mosque is about 98 years old and is considered an important historical place in Malé. Some historians and community members say it should be protected because it is part of the country’s heritage.
A social media campaign called “Save Bandaara Miskiy” has also been started by people who want the mosque preserved.
Did You Know?
The mosque, originally called Bunbaa Miskiiy and now known as Bandaara Miskiiy (officially Masjid Al Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddeen), is a historic mosque built in 1927 during the reign of Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddeen III. It was built by Dawoodi Bohra merchants who settled in Malé with government permission beginning in 1857.
What does the minister say?
The minister later explained that the goal is to expand and modernize the mosque while keeping its traditional Maldivian style and heritage. He said other historic mosques around the world have also been expanded over time.
Different opinions
Some people believe the mosque should be carefully preserved because it is part of Maldivian history. Others say expanding the mosque could allow more people to pray there while still respecting the original design. The discussion continues as people share ideas about how to protect history while improving facilities for the future.
