
Maldives youth national football team has travelled to Singapore to prepare for the SAFF Under 20 Championship, which will begin in the Maldives on March 23.
The team will stay in Singapore for about one week as part of their training camp.
Practice Matches
While in Singapore, Maldivian team will play two friendly matches against Singapore’s Under 19 national team.
- The first match will be played on Sunday at Choa Chu Kang Stadium.
- The second match will take place next Tuesday, also at the same stadium.
These matches will help both teams practice and improve before their upcoming tournaments.
The Tournament
The SAFF Under 20 Championship will bring together seven South Asian countries.
Maldives is in Group A with:
- Sri Lanka
- Bhutan
- Nepal
Group B includes:
- India (the current champions)
- Bangladesh
- Pakistan
The final match of the tournament will be played on April 3.

Maldives finished third place in 2019, fourth place in 2022, and reached the semi finals in 2025.
Coaching the Team
The youth team will be guided by István Urbányi, who is also the head coach of Maldives senior national team. This will be his third time coaching Maldives, and the friendly match against Singapore will be one of his first games since returning earlier this year.
Choosing the Players
More than 150 young footballers joined open trials held in January. From these trials, the best players were selected to represent Maldives and prepare for the championship.
