Police investigate case of cat cruelty in Hoarafushi

Police have started an investigation after a cat was intentionally abused and killed in HA. Hoarafushi.

The case was reported to police on March 12, 2026, at about 7:06 pm.

Police said they have already questioned three people as part of the investigation.

Statements have been recorded from the individuals, but no arrests have been made yet.

Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing.

Cruelty to animals is a crime under Maldives law.

Section 625 of the Penal Code states that harming or abusing animals is illegal.

The usual punishment for this offence is about one month and six days in prison. In more serious cases, a court can give a prison sentence of up to three months.
