The Local Government Authority (LGA) has announced that newly elected local councilors will be sworn in on 17 May 2026.
The date marks the end of the current council term, which expires the same day under the Decentralisation Act, where councilors serve five year terms.
What will happen on the day
The ceremony will begin with the swearing in of councilors, followed by the signing of official declarations by members of the Women’s Development Committees (WDCs).
The oath will be administered by judges in each respective island or jurisdiction. Final schedules are expected to be confirmed after coordination with the judiciary and councils.
Election results in numbers
A total of 681 councilors and 681 WDC members were elected in the Local Council and WDC elections held on 4 April 2026.
This is the first time councilors will serve a full five year term following changes to the decentralisation framework.
