Government of Maldives says it is monitoring the supply of essential goods and price changes as global disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict affect markets.
Essential goods under watch
Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed said 164 essential items are being tracked on a daily basis.
He said no shortages have been reported over the past month, and that meetings have been held with major importers to review supply conditions. “We are working closely with the country’s major importers and monitoring the market dynamics,” he said.
Cement supply concerns
Cement availability has tightened in recent weeks, with prices rising. A 50kg bag that was previously sold for under MVR 100 is now being sold at over MVR 300 in some cases, while some suppliers have reported being out of stock.
Economic Minister Saeed said arrangements have been made with four additional suppliers in case existing supply channels are disrupted.
Gas prices under discussion
Government also said it is in discussions with suppliers over cooking gas prices.
Villa Gas has announced planned price increases, with a 10kg cylinder rising from MVR 200 to MVR 350 and a 20kg cylinder from MVR 450 to MVR 650.
Economic Minister Saeed said LPG shipments for both Villa and STO were expected to arrive, and that options are being considered. “A decision will be made soon. We will aim to avoid price increases where possible,” he said. Officials said international prices remain a key factor. Current LPG contract rates are at USD 757 per tonne, with further adjustments expected.
Government says essential goods remain available in the market, while monitoring continues as global conditions evolve.
