A new law with stricter rules about drugs has now come into effect in the Maldives.
The amended Drugs Act was passed by Parliament in December and later approved by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in February.
What does the new law say?
The updated law introduces stronger penalties for people involved in drug crimes such as bringing drugs into the country, selling them, or making money from drug trafficking.
In very serious cases involving large amounts of drugs, the law allows courts to give the death penalty. If the Supreme Court judges do not all agree on that decision, the person could instead receive life imprisonment and a large fine.
Stronger powers for authorities
The new law also gives more powers to police and customs officers to stop drugs from being smuggled into the Maldives by air or sea.
Property and money can be taken
Courts can now order that money or property connected to drug crimes be taken away. This includes things like money earned from drug sales or items used in illegal activities.
Why was the law changed?
The government says the changes were made to help reduce drug use and drug trafficking in the country.
The law also includes improvements to drug treatment programmes and the drug court system to help address drug-related problems in society.
