Maldives has distributed a record amount of Zakat al-Fitr this year, with each eligible person receiving about USD 389.
What is Zakat al-Fitr
Zakat al-Fitr is a special charity that Muslims give at the end of Ramadan. It is meant to help people in need so everyone can celebrate Eid with enough food and basic necessities.
Record amount distributed
This year, a total of USD 901,167 was shared among people who are registered as poor or in need. The total amount collected was over USD 907,911, the highest ever recorded in Maldives.
Each person received around USD 389, making it the highest per person amount in the country’s history.
Who received the support
The distribution included all eligible individuals across the country. For the first time, 62 underprivileged orphans were also included in the list of recipients.
How the money was collected
Zakat House used seven online systems to make it easier for people to pay Zakat. At the same time, those who could not use online systems were able to give cash through island councils.
There were also physical collection points at the Islamic Centre where people could donate using cash, cards, or even grain. Grain donations were either given directly to people or shared with welfare programmes.
Fair distribution across Maldives
With a digital system, Zakat House was able to track collections in real time and make sure the money reached people across all atolls.
All registered recipients received their share before Eid prayers, helping families prepare for the celebration.
Why it matters
Zakat al-Fitr is an important part of Ramadan. It reminds people to care for others and share what they have, so that everyone can enjoy Eid with dignity and happiness.
