India has opened applications for a new scholarship programme called the Lata Mangeshkar Scholarship Scheme.

The scholarship gives Maldivian students a chance to study arts and culture in India.

Applications are open now, and the deadline to apply is April 15, 2026.

The scholarship allows students to study many cultural subjects at institutions across India.

These include:

  • Music
  • Dance
  • Theatre and performing arts
  • Sculpture
  • Indian languages
  • Indian cuisine and cultural studies

The programme is managed by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

The scholarship is named after Lata Mangeshkar, a legendary Indian singer who was known around the world.

The programme is part of India’s efforts to promote its culture and strengthen cultural connections with other countries.

India is one of the most popular destinations for Maldivian students who want to study abroad.

Over the past three years, India has offered several scholarship programmes for Maldivian students.

These scholarships allow students to study undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programmes in fields such as:

  • Social sciences

Maldivian students have also been able to apply for other scholarships offered by India.

These include:

  • Aid to Maldives Scholarship Scheme for undergraduate programmes including engineering
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee General Scholarship Scheme for undergraduate and postgraduate studies
  • Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme for students from Commonwealth countries
  • AYUSH Scholarship Scheme for traditional Indian medicine such as Ayurveda and Homeopathy.

Education cooperation has become an important part of the relationship between Maldives and India.

The Lata Mangeshkar Scholarship Scheme adds another opportunity for Maldivian students who are interested in arts and culture.
