President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially established Maldives Territorial Office, as promised in this year’s Presidential Address. The office has been set up as a department within the President’s Office and will be responsible for all matters related to the country’s maritime boundaries.
What Will It Do
The Maldives Territorial Office has a number of important jobs:
- Coordinate with government agencies and international bodies on matters related to territorial boundaries
- Determine the exact coordinates of baselines and boundary limits
- Provide information on maps and legal instruments related to the country’s sea borders
Staff are currently being recruited and administrative arrangements are underway.
Why Was It Created
In his address at the opening of the People’s Majlis, President Muizzu said experts had advised that a dedicated office was needed to manage issues around boundary determination. He said the government would create an agency for this purpose, and Maldives Territorial Office is the result.
The President also referred to decisions made by the previous administration regarding the Chagos Archipelago. He said a commission will be formed to examine those decisions and determine responsibility.
